Falcons punish the Panthers 20-6

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 10 September 2006 at 10:23 pm

The Atlanta Falcons plain and simply kicked the Panthers butt.  The Falcons went into Carolina with the idea of punching the Panthers in the mouth and did exactly that.  Michael Vick completed 10 of 22 passes (45.5%) for 140 yards and 2 TDs.  Vick also ran the ball 7 times for 48 yards (6.9 ypc).  Warrick Dunn toted the rock 29 times for 132 yards (4.6 ypc).  Young RB Jerious Norwood carried the ball 10 times for 66 yards.  WR Michael Jenkins had a good game catching 3 passes for 77 yards (25.7 avg) and a TD.  TE Alge Crumpler caught 3 passes for 27 yards and a TD.

DE John Abraham led the defense with 2 sacks for a loss of 20 yards.  The Panthers only ran the ball 16 times for 65 yards (4.1 ypc).  The Panthers only completed 53.8% of their passes for 150 net yards thru the air.

Today could be the start of something big for the Falcons.  What a way to start a season….dominating the division favorite on their turf!

Falcons vs. Panthers

Click here to see if the Falcons are favored

The Falcons have alot to prove against the Panthers.  The Panthers swept the Falcons last year, pounding them 68-17!  The Falcons might be able to run the ball against the Panthers if, and only if, the offensive line can handle the front four of the Panthers.  Dunn, Norwood and Vick all have good speed, but so does the Panther defense.  It’s also hard to pass against the Panther defense, because the Panthers front line gets a good rush on the QB without blitzing, and they frequently drop linebackers into coverage which could make it a long day for Vick’s favorite receiver TE Alge Crumpler.  New WR Ashley Lelie could be a wildcard as he might be able to get deep out of the slot position against the Panthers nickel back.

It seems as if the Falcons have really improved their defense, but the Panthers offense will be a huge test.  The Panthers love to run the ball to set up the pass.  Running backs DeShaun Foster and D’Angelo Williams both have home-run speed and will test the perimeter defense of the Falcons.  WR Steve Smith is a little gimpy and the Panthers really need him, or the Falcons will just put 8 in the box and dare Jake Delhomme to pass to Keyshawn Johnson, Drew Carter and Keary Colbert.  If Smith plays, even if injured, he must be accounted for at all times because he can go the distance at any time……from anyplace on the field.

This should be a great game, but I have to go with the Panthers here.  I think the Falcons are improved, especially on defense, but the Panthers are still a better team.

Falcons career QB numbers

Michael Vick is an outstanding leader, even though he is not an outstanding QB.  Vick has a career record as a starter of 31-19-1 (61.4% wins) in his career.  He also is 2-2 in the playoffs as a starter.  Vick’s career QB rating is 75.8.

Matt Schaub is highly thought of as a back-up QB.  Schaub is 0-2 as a starter and sports a career QB rating of 68.8.

The Falcons looked good on offense, but their defense continued to look bad.  Matt Schaub completed 4 of 7 passes for 52 yards and a TD.  Shockley completed 9 of 15 passes for 94 yards and a TD, ran the ball 4 times for 31 yards.

RB Marlion Jackson ran the ball well again.  Jackson ran the ball for 89 yards on 17 carries (5.2 ypc).  Jerious Norwood looked excellent again, rushing 6 times for 70 yards (11.7 ypc).

The Jags ran for 154 yards (4.8 ypc) and completed 56% of their passes for 158 net yards thru the air,
