Falcons vs. Giants

Blogged under Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Thursday 12 October 2006 at 1:53 pm
This should be an interesting football game.  The high-powered New York Giants offense (396.3 yards per game, 25.0 points per game) vs.the stingy Falcons defense that only allows 10.5 points per game and 269.8 yards per game.

The Giants need to get off to a fast start offensively in this game.  If they build a quick lead against the Falcons, it will take the Falcons out of their running offense.  Eli Manning will have to be careful against the Falcons secondary because they haven’t allowed a TD pass this season and have picked off 6 passes already.  Don’t expect the Giants to change how they attack a defense just because the Falcons have a good one.  Tiki Barber will give the Falcons front 7 fits chasing him around the field.  Barber has 348 yards rushing and 148 yards receiving in four games.  The Giants also like to change up a little during the game and let Brandon Jacobs hammer at the other teams defense for awhile.  Jacobs is a huge back that has rushed for 124 yards and 5.4 yards per carry so far this season.

The Falcons will try to do what they do best…..run the football.  The Falcons are averaging 234.3 yards rushing per game and 6.1 yards per carry.  The Giants defense will offer stiff resistence to the Falcons as they only allow 86.5 yards rushing per game and 3.0 yards per carry.   Warrick Dunn (365 yards), Michael Vick (333 yards rushing) and Jerious Norwood (217 yards rushing) will spread the carries around to keep everyone fresh.  It is imperative that the Falcons are successful running the ball because they only average 116.0 yards passing per game, and they are not built to be able to come from behind.  That showed against the New Orleans Saints.

The early part of this game will determine who wins it.  If the Giants get a quick lead and force the Falcons to throw more than they want to…..the Giants will win.  If the Falcons get the lead by running the ball effectively, they will try to grind out the clock and probably win.  Either way, this should be a good football game.

Falcons special teams solid after rocky start from kicker

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Wednesday 11 October 2006 at 10:43 am

The Falcons have done a fantastic job covering kicks.  The Falcons allowing 9.3 yards per punt return and only 17.7 yards per kick-off return.  This is an extension of the Falcons fine defense.

Morten Andersen handles the short kicks as he has made 6 of 7 FGs and both XPTs he’s attempted.  Punter/Kicker Michael Koenen has done a fine job as a punter averaging 43.6 yards per punt, 34.3 net yards per punt, and has pinned the opponent inside their 20 yard line 35.7% of the time.  Koenen still handles the long FGs after failing as the main kicker.  Koenen was only 3 of 9 on FGs and made all 4 XPTs.

Allen Rossum is doing a fine job returning kicks as he always has.  Rossum is averaging 11.9 yards per punt return and 25.3 yards per kick-off return.  Jerious Norwood has returned 2 kicks for 69 yards (34.5 avg) but he’s more needed on the offense.

Falcons is good shape heading into bye week

As the Falcons go into their bye week, they have a couple of things to work on.  The one thing that jumps off the stat page is a lack of a passing game on offense.  The Falcons are only averaging 116.0 yards passing per game, and really are a team that is dead in the water if they fall behind in a game.  Michael Vick is only completing 50% of his passes, but he has been a victim of a lot of dropped passes, especially from TE Alge Crumpler.  Another thing is the O-Line needs to protect Vick a little better when he drops back to pass.  Vick has been sacked 11 times in 102 pass drops this season (10.8%).

Vick leading the team well, but he needs to pass better

Make no mistake, Michael Vick is the most exciting QB in football.  No QB in the league can match his physical ability.  Michael Vick has carried the ball 38 times for 333 yards (8.8 ypc) and a TD.  Vick needs to become a better passer because if a team jumps on the Falcons like the Saints did….he’s ill-equipped to bring the team back.  Vick has completed 45 of 90 passes (50%) for 522 yards with 3 TDs and 2 INT.  Vick’s QB rating is a sub-par 69.8.

Falcons destroy Cards 32-10

The Falcons dominated this game from the opening kick-off until the final second.  Michael Vick completed 13 of 22 passes for 153 yards and a pick-off.  Vick also carried the ball 11 times for 101 yards (9.2 ypc).  Rookie RB Jerious Norwood carried the ball 6 times for 106 yards (17.7 ypc) and a TD.  Warrick Dunn had an off-game carrying the ball 19 times for 55 yards (2.9 ypc).  WR Ashley Lelie caught 2 passes for 61 yards.

Morten Andersen was 5 for 5 on field goals.  Punter Michael Koenen connected on a 51-yard FG also.

Linebacker Demorrio Williams led the defense with 10 tackles.  CB D’Angelo Hall returned a pass he intercepted off Kurt Warner 37 yards for a TD.  The Falcons stuffed the Cards running game, holding them to 31 yards on 25 carries (1.2 ypc).  The Cards completed 16 of 28 passes for 156 net yards passing.

Another totally dominating performance by the Falcons.

Shut-down corners

Mess with the Falcons starting corners at your own risk.   Jason Webster has 13 tackles and 2 interceptions and DeAngelo Hall has 9 tackles and 2 interceptions that he has returned 78 yards.  Both of these guys are aggressive and take chances, so you might get lucky once in a while by taking them on…..but they can make you pay if you make a mistake.
