This was an outstanding win for the Atlanta Falcons.  Joey Harrington outplayed Matt Schaub much to the delight of the Falcons’ faithful.  Harrington completed 23 of 29 passes for 223 yards with 2 TD passes and 0 interceptions.  Warrick Dunn was also busy with 18 carries for 62 yards (3.4 ypc) and he also caught 4 passes for 9 yards (2.3 avg).  Jerious Norwood did his part by rushing for 29 yards on 9 carries (3.2 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 16 yards (8.0 avg).  WRs Michael Jenkins (6 rec, 64 yards, 2 TDs) and Roddy White (3 rec, 64 yards) continue to play like the high draft picks they were.  The Falcons held onto the ball for 34:12 of this football game.  They did that by completing 23 of 29 passes for 214 yards and rushing for 90 yards on 30 carries (3.0 ypc).

The Falcons defense was led by linebacker Michael Boley with 9 tackles.  The Falcons played good against the run holding the Texans to 87 yards on 22 carries (4.0 ypc).  But the Falcons had a rough time against the pass as the Texans completed 28 of 40 passes for 311 yards.

Where has the running game gone for the Atlanta Falcons?

The Falcons’ running game has went to the dogs!  Sorry, I had to do it.  Seriously, QB Michael Vick was the best running back on the Falcons last season as the rushed for over 1,000 yards last season.  He literally could score on any play and the Falcons just don’t have that dynamic in the current backfield.  It seems as if the wear and tear is starting to affect the undersized Warrick Dunn.  He’s starting to look his age as he has carried the ball 46 times for 160 yards (3.5 ypc) with 1 TD run.  It’s only a matter of time until Jerious Norwood replaces Dunn as the main back and the sooner that happens….the quicker the offense will be better.  Norwood has carried the ball 20 times for 95 yards (4.8 ypc) and he’s also a huge threat out of the backfield as he has caught 6 passes for 71 yards so far this season.

Atlanta Falcons vs. Houston Texans

The Houston Texans look to get back on track against the Falcons.  The Texans are banged up though and the Falcons played their best game of the season last week against the Panthers, but they lost a close game.  Texans’ QB Matt Schaub probably has had this game circled on his calendar since the season started after his trade from the Falcons jst before the NFL Draft.  But, it’s very questionable as to whether he will be able to attack a Falcons’ secondary that is allowing opposing QBs a 102.1 QB Rating.  With Andre Johnson and Jacoby Jones out for this game, look for the Texans to throw more short passes than usual.  TE Owen Daniels (13 rec, 128 yards) and Kevin Walter will likely be the short targets with Andre Davis the lone deep threat for the Texans against the Falcons.  Ahman Green is also hurting but the Texans hope to have Ron Dayne back as the Texans might be smart to attack the Falcons on the ground where they have had issues stopping the run.  The Falcons have allowed 142.3 yards rushing per game this season.

The Falcons will likely go with “Air Harrington” this week again as it worked well last week.  The Texans have issues on pass defense as they allow 234.7 yards passsing per game this season.  If the Falcons can keep DE Mario Williams and rookie DT Amobi O’Koye out of the backfield, Harrington should have success throwing the football.  Look for the Falcons to challenge the Texans deep with Roddy White (15, 237 yards), Michael Jenkins (9 rec, 104 yards) and Joe Horn (6 rec, 84 yards) and when the defense loosens up the coverage the Falcons will go short to TE Alge Crumpler (13 rec, 156 yards) and RBs Warrick Dunn and Jerious Norwood out of the backfield.  The Falcons will use the pass to open up the running game as the Falcons are only averaging 89.7 yards rushing per game.

PREDICTION:  The linemakers have this game about right as the Texans are a 3-point favorite.  That’s because this is a game that could go either way, but I’m picking the Falcons to win at home based on all of the injuries the Texans have on offense.

The Atlanta Falcons suspend and fine CB DeAngelo Hall

Blogged under General, Big Falcons News, Bloglockers, Front Page by dawgpounded on Wednesday 26 September 2007 at 7:32 pm

The Atlanta Falcons have suspended starting corner DeAngelo Hall for at least 1 quarter and they have fined him $100,000 for violating team rules.  This will hurt the Falcons a bit as Hall is by far the best cover corner on the Falcons.  He has 7 tackles and 1 interception so far this season.  But after his antics during last Sunday’s game against the Panthers that likely cost the Falcons a legit chance to win the game the Falcons had to come down hard on Hall.  Rookie Chris Houston will get the start in Hall’s place and he has made 4 tackles this season.

Carolina Panthers 27, Atlanta Falcons 20

The Falcons played their butts off yesterday but it just fell a little bit short on the scoreboard.  Joey Harrington played an outstanding game as he completed 31 of 44 passes for 361 yards with 2 TD passes and 0 interceptions.  Warrick Dunn was busy as he carried the ball 11 times for 55 yards (5.0 ypc) and he also caught 4 passes for 13 yards (3.3 avg).  Jerious Norwood also played a decent game with 6 carries for 32 yards (5.3 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 34 yards (11.3 avg).  WRs Roddy White (7 rec, 127 yards, TD) and Michael Jenkins (6 rec, 76 yards) both had one of their best games ever for the Falcons.  TE Alge Crumpler also had a solid game with 6 grabs for 63 yards (10.5 avg) with 1 TD run.  The Falcons rushed for 91 yards on 19 carries (4.8 ypc) and they also completed 31 of 44 passes for 351 yards.

The defense was led by linebacker Michael Boley (9 tackles) and DE John Abraham (2 tackles, 2 sacks) were very active for the Falcons.  But the Falcons couldn’t stop the Panthers running game as they ran the ball 36 times for 175 yards (4.9 ypc).  The Panthers also completed 13 of 22 passes for 138 yards.
