The Atlanta Falcons are again looking for a new head coach

The Atlanta Falcons thought they had signed their coach of the future last season when Bobby Petrino was lured away from the Louisville Cardinals.  But, Petrino found out the hard way that the NFL is 10 times tougher than college ball.  No recruiting edges in the NFL when every team spends the same amount of money.  Also, you can’t make your own schedule in the NFL…..8 road games and 8 home games.  Bobby Petrino quit like a coward last December after he was 3-10 (.231 %)for the Falcons.  He is now the head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks so here’s hoping the Georgia Bulldogs kick his butt every time they play.  Emmitt Thomas finished up the season going 1-2 (.333 %) but he’s not a legit candidate for the open job at head coach.

The Atlanta Falcons QB situation was a mess

With Michael Vick in the pokey the Falcons were left in a lurch at QB this season.  First up was Joey Harrington who was signed on to be the backup this season.  Harrington played in 12 games this season for the Falcons and he completed 215 of 348 passes (61.8%) for 2,215 yards with 7 TD passes and 8 interceptions (77.2 QB Rating).  He also carried the football 14 times for 33 yards (2.4 ypc) this season.  Harrington has now played in 81 games so far in his NFL career and he has completed 1,424 of 2,538 passes (56.1%) for 14,693 yards with 79 TD passes and 85 interceptions (69.4 QB Rating).  He also has carried the football 142 times for 402 yards (2.8 ypc).

Byron Leftwich was next up but he just couldn’t stay healthy as his ankles bothered him until he couldn’t play anymore.  He played in 3 games for the Falcons this season and he completed 32 of 58 passes (55.2%) for 279 yards with 1 TD pass and 2 interceptions (59.5 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 6 times for 7 yards (1.2 ypc).  Leftwich has now played in 49 games in his NFL career and he has completed 821 of 1,402 passes (58.6%) for 9,321 yards with 52 TD passes and 38 interceptions (79.7 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 126 times for 371 yards (2.9 ypc) with 8 TD runs.

Chris Redman was solid as the #3 QB of the Falcons this season.  He played in 7 games for the Falcons and he completed 89 of 149 passes (59.7%) for 1,079 yards with 10 TD passes and 5 interceptions (90.4 QB Rating).  He also carried the football 8 times for 16 yards (2.0 ypc) last season.  Redman has now played in 17 games in his NFL career and he has completed 195 of 347 passes (56.2%) for 2,190 yards with 17 TD passes and 10 interceptions (79.5 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 21 times for 28 yards (1.3 ypc) in his career.
