The Falcons played a very sloppy first quarter as they had a punt blocked and returned for a TD and they were down 14-0 heading into the second quarter.  From then on the defense was outstanding and the offense chipped away at the lead.  Then with 1:22 seconds left in the game, Matt Ryan led the Falcons on a 12 play, 68 yard drive that resulted in Matt Bryant’s game winning field goal with 2 seconds left in the game.  Ryan completed 26 of 43 passes for 273 yards with 1 TD pass and 2 INTs.  He also carried the ball 4 times for 15 yards (3.8 ypc) yesterday.  Michael Turner led the way on the ground for the Falcons in this game with 50 yards rushing on 16 carries (3.1 ypc).  He also caught 3 passes for 28 yards (9.3 avg) yesterday.  Jason Snelling pitched in with 7 carries for 31 yards (4.4 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 5 yards.  Roddy White (7 rec, 104 yards), Tony Gonzalez (7 rec, 41 yards) and Harry Douglas (3 rec, 59 yards, TD) led the way for the Falcons in the passing game.  The Falcons finished up with 98 yards rushing on 29 carries (3.4 ypc) and they also completed 26 of 43 passes for 259 yards.

The Falcons appeared to have lost this game in O.T. when Garrett Hartley of the Saints lined up for a 29-yard field goal but he missed it.  Matt Ryan then led the Falcons on a 12 play, 52 yard drive that set up Matt Bryant for the game winning 46-yard field goal.  This was a great win for the Falcons!  Matt Ryan completed 19 of 30 passes for 228 yards with 2 TD passes and 0 INTs in this game.  He also carried the ball 6 times for 26 yards (4.3 ypc) in this game.  Michael Turner got a lot of work in as he carried the ball 30 times for 114 yards (3.8 ypc) with a TD run and he also caught 2 passes for 11 yards.  Jason Snelling also got his touches as he carried the ball 14 times for 62 yards (4.4 ypc) and he caught 1 pass for 8 yards.  Tony Gonzalez (8 rec, 110 yards) and Roddy White (5 rec, 69 yards) each caught 1 TD pass apiece to help lead the way in the Falcons in the passing game yesterday.  The Falcons finished up with 202 yards rushing on 50 carries (4.0 ypc) and they also completed 19 of 30 passes for 215 yards.

Atlanta Falcons 10, New York Jets 7

Blogged under Big Falcons News,Bloglockers,Game Recaps,General by Andrew on Monday 21 December 2009 at 11:05 pm

The Atlanta Falcons (7-7) were in a defensive battle to say the least against the New York Jets (7-7), and won a low scoring affair.  Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense struggled most of the game, but they came through when they needed them most.  With only minutes left, the Falcons offense had only 165 yards before Ryan led them on a 73-yard game-winning drive.  It ended with Ryan hitting Tony Gonzalez for an 16-yard touchdown with only 1:38 to go.  Ryan finished 152 yards and 1 touchdown on 16/32 passes.  Running back Michael Turner tried to play through an ankle injury, but he hurt it again on only one carry and may be out next week.

The Falcons defense did give up a lot of yards, but they picked off Jets’ rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez three times.  They gave up one big play to the rookie when he hit Braylon Edwards for a 65-yard touchdown and the Jets only score.  The Falcons also did a decent job containing Jets’ running back Thomas Jones.  Jones got 52 yards on 19 carries, but his backup Shonn Greene was successful getting 30 yards on 8 carries.  This was a nice spoiler win for the Falcons who were already eliminated from the playoffs, while the Jets were still clinging to their playoff hopes.
